Emile-Franois Carlier (1827-1879) was apprenticed to Jean-Jacques Feuchère and made his debut at the Salon in 1859. The present figure was first exhibited in bronze in 1865 (no2896) and again in marble in 1868 (no3462) which was bought by a certain Mr. Nagelmackers.
