Lot Essay

The London dealer Edward Holmes Baldock (d.1845) was both a retailer and manufacturer of furniture and objets de luxe in the French taste. He used the brand EHB both on antique pieces, particularly Boulle and Louis XV marquetry furniture, as well as on his own productions which were inspired by French Ancien Regime prototypes. He helped form some of the most important English early-19th-century collections of 18th-century French furniture, including those of William Beckford, King George IV and the Dukes of Buccleuch and Northumberland.
