Lot Essay

It is understood that this is one of four electrotype copies produced in 1983 using moulds taken from the original helmet which is preserved in the British Museum. Of the four copies, three were destined for public display in museums in Lancashire, the Ribchester Museum and Carnuntum in Germany, the present Lot being the only example in private circulation.

For further information on Roman Sports and Cavalry helmets please see the catalogue entry for the Crosby Garrett helmet sold in these rooms, 7th October 2010, Lot 176 (£2,281,250 inc. prem.).
