Lot Essay

The same figure appears in the foreground of the drawing Four Male Nudes which was with Jean-Luc Baroni (cat. 2011), and which has not been conclusively linked with any finished work by the Cavaliere d'Arpino. We are grateful to Professor Herwarth Röttgen, who has suggested the attribution for the present drawing on the basis of a photograph.
