Influenced by Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-1828) who Boys met in Paris, stylistically the present watercolour is comparable to his early works of the 1830s. Bonington's influence is visible in the use of scratching out and sweeping washes of colour.

It has not been possible to identify the landscape in the present watercolour, but the church in the centre of the sheet is similar to one illustrated in a watercolour of 1830 that sold in these Rooms on 3 June 2004, lot 103, entitled A river landscape, possibly near Brussels, Belgium.
