'Peter Doig's paintings evoke the memory of places, of landscapes. This is an ambivalent kind of memory: it is not clear whether we have seen these somewhere, or whether we have known them for far too long, or whether we have always been looking for them. We do not know whether they are unknown or familiar; whether they are fantasy or reality. This imponderability is the source of their magic.' (E.
