Ashley's designs were greatly inspired by the un-spoilt luscious surroundings of their impressive Victorian country house, Rhydolog, set in the rural heart of the Welsh Borders, near Rhayader, Powys. They had acquired the house as a family home in 1973, and it became a fundamental component to the Ashley interior style, not only reflected in her floral designs, but also as a creative hub, where the Ashley's designed, conducted business and entertained. Since Laura Ashley's death from a tragic fall in 1985, the house and its comfortable yet stylish interiors, decorated with early Ashley printed wallpapers and combined with 18th and 19th century furnishings, have remained relatively untouched. Latterly, the house formed the headquarters for the charitable organization, the Laura Ashley Foundation. Now it has been sold and this month's sale presents a range of furnishings from Rhydolog and an opportunity to be inspired by Laura Ashley.
