AN ENGLISH TASTE In stark contrast to the heavy dark pieces of the 'Cromwellian' period, Carloean furniture offered a colourful blend of sumptuous silks, tapestries, cabinets veneered with walnut and lacquer ware. The effect of these new furnishings created an extravagant look to satisfy the demand for fashionable objects influenced mainly by the French Court. Great houses such as Ham are windows in how this style developed in England. These rich colourful pieces would have only been owned by the very few. Lacquer ware such as the cabinet on stand illustrated below would have been imported from the East and sold at a high cost. Imitation lacquer or 'Japanned' pieces, and other examples, such as the 'oyster veneered' chest and carved gilt wood table give us an impression of the luxury which was generally beyond the reach of even the middle classes in 17th and Early 18th century England.
