Lot Essay

This composition, inspired by Lucas van Leyden's engraving of 1523, can be compared with Both's drawing of the same subject, in the Prentenkabinet der Rijksuniversiteit, Leiden (see L. Trezzani: Andries and Jan Both, The Bamboccianti: Painters of Everyday Life in 17th-century Rome, Rome, 1983, p.198, fig.6.5).
