Frances Adcock married Robert Butcher, steward and land agent to John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford on the 5th January 1732 at St. Ethelburga Church in Bishopsgate, London. Between 1747 and 1754 Robert supervised the expansion of the Bedford estates, for which he was lucratively rewarded with a salary of £700 per annum. Mrs Butcher sat to Chamberlin in 1778 and her portrait now hangs in the Williams College Museum of Art, Williamstown, Massachusetts. Alongside her portrait, hangs that of Mr Burtcher painted by Thomas Gainsborough with whom the Butchers were well acquainted. A second portrait of Mr Butcher by Gainsborough hangs in the Prado Museum, and their son, Thomas, and his wife Elizabeth Ives, also sat to Gainsborough (the latter sold at Sotheby's, London, 6 April 1993, lot 48).
