Lot Essay

This work was given to the father of the present owner by the Grand Duchess Xenia Romanov, sister to the last Tzar of Russia, in 1960. The figure is said to be Anna Anderson.
She was the best known of several impostors who claimed to be Grand Duchess Anastasia of Russia. The real Anastasia, the youngest daughter of the last Tzar and Tzarina of Russia, Nicholas II and Alexandra, was killed along with her parents and siblings on 17 July 1918 by communist revolutionaries in Ekaterinburg, Russia but the location of her body was unknown until 2008.
