Lot Essay

In 1962 Ruszkowski stayed with friends at their flat in Sperlonga, between Rome and Naples. His daughter accompanied him on this trip and she comments 'The streets were steps carved out of rock with tantalising glimpses of glinting sea between the houses. The flat had a balcony overlooking the main square where we loved to watch all life go by' (private correspondence, 2 June 2011).
