Lot Essay
This table is remarkably English in its basic design and construction and illustrates the Portuguese fashion for estilo Inglès in the second half of the 18th century. This was due in no small part to the popularity and spread of the designs of Thomas Chippendale following his publication of The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director in 1754, which helped ease the stylistic transition from the exuberant rococo of the mid-1700s to the neoclassicism of the late century. A related games table with fold-over top inlaid with three compartments centred by a chess board is illustrated and discussed in, Fernando Castro Freire, Mobiliário, Lisbon, 2001, vol. II, pp. 204-205.
