Lot Essay

Manuel Viola was one of the most international artists of his generation and his creativity spanned from painting to poetry, scenography, acting and theoretical writing. During the Post-War period in Paris, he became a quite well-known personality befriended by Hans Hartung, Francis Picabia, André Breton, Benjamin Péret and Pablo Picasso. In the late 1950s he joined the Informalism of the 'El Paso Group' in Cuenca alongside artists such as Antonio Saura and Pablo Serrano, but soon after took his own path towards a colourful and gestural Expressionism, along with his beloved wife and muse, Juana Francés.
