Embellished with beautifully-carved ebony panels taken from a Louis XIII cabinet of circa 1650-60, these superb French meubles d'appui typify the Parisian fashion for luxurious furniture incorporating precious exotic or earlier elements. This fashion was developed by the powerful marchands-mercier, the innovative designers active from the first half 18th century, who employed precious lacquer, porcelain, pietra dura, Boulle marquetry, and in this instance ebony panels, for the creation of new types of furniture with precious and costly decoration.

The carved panels of the present meubles d'appui were taken from a Louis XII cabinet, one of the grand and regal examples of the great ebony cabinets, which dominated veneered furniture production during the first half of the 17th century. The first menuisiers en ébène or ebenistes were established in the French capital from circa 1610-20. Most came from the Northern or Southern Netherlands or from Germany, where the art for veneering furniture with exotic woods had been practised for at least a generation. The large cabinets they made in Paris, generally with two large doors and an open stand, were fashionable from circa 1620 to 1660, and were then gradually superseded by furniture decorated with pictorial marquetry, such as that executed by Pierre Gole and André-Charles Boulle.

A pair of related meubles d'appui incorporating Louis XIII ebony panels, stamped 'Fischer' were sold Christie's Paris, Le Haras d'Estimauville; Oeuvres et Objets d'Art provenant des Collections Rothschild, 26-27 October 2010, lot 363 (EUR92,2000).
