Lot Essay

Cabinets and boxes made in Gujarat and Sindh were typically inlaid with ivory as is often found throughout India, however the work from this region often incorporates a wider variety of coloured timbers and metals than is usually found. The present box with its pinned ivory inlay depicting a goat being stalked by a tiger is closely related to a another box identified as being from this region, which is illustrated and discussed in, Amin Jaffer, Luxury Goods from India, London, 2002, p. 28 & 29.
A related table Indo-Portuguese ivory inlaid table casket, identified as Sindh province was sold, Scone Palace and Blairquhan, Christie's London, 24 May 2007, lot 304.
