The theme of the briar rose was pervasive in Morris's work. He wrote the verses that accompany Edward Burne-Jones's series of paintings titled The Legend of Briar Rose. One of his first wallpaper designs, Trellis, features briar roses with birds and was created by Morris and Webb in November 1862. Morris used the Briar Rose pattern for the walls in a bedroom at Red House. The present lot was aptly placed in the bedroom at West House.
