Veronica Whall was the daughter of the eminent stained glass designer Christopher Whitworth Whall (1849-1924), a member of the Arts and Crafts Movement and teacher at both the Central School of Art and Royal College of Art in London.
Painting this whimsical scene at age 20, the artist joins in the Victorian fairy painting phenomenon. The genre was popularised by the work of John Anster Fitzgerald and influential in the work of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
