A lacquer writing box (suzuribako)
Meiji period (19th century)
The writing box with rounded corners and overhanging lid decorated in varicolored gold, silver and red hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, togidashi and kirikane with mandarin ducks in a meandering river to one side of a building, the underside of the lid decorated with pheasants in a maple tree on a riverbank, fitted with a small tray similarly decorated with maples on a riverbank, a slate inkstone with fundame rim, and a silver waterdropper (suiteki) in the form of two maple leaves, the ground of the box nashiji and the rims fundame
