Shakumi is a middle-aged woman who is emotionally traumatized, her expression slightly strained. She has a unique coiffure, with uppermost bundles of locks separated from the main mass of hair at some distance from the center part.

For a study of Noh masks, see Stephen E. Marvin, Heaven Has a Face, So Does Hell, 2 vols. (Warren, CT: Floating World Editions, 2010).
