Jan Antonisz. Van Ravesteyn, who was born in The Hague in circa 1572, moved to Delft around 1597 and in 1610 became a pupil of the portrait painter Michiel Janszoon van Mierveldt ( Delft 1567-1641). Known to have visited Italy during his career; in 1598 he joined the Guild of St Luke and in 1656 he was invited to become a member of The Hague's newly founded artists' society, La Pittura. He received commissions from many of the leading figures of his time. His work was particularly appreciated for its elegance and for his close attention to the complex details of the costumes of the day.
