Standing with hands in abhaya- and varadamudra, wearing pleated robes with finely incised motifs at the hem and collar, his gentle face with elongated eyes and smiling lips, with hair pulled back over the prominent ushnisha

Lot Essay

The treatment of the drapery with concentric cascading folds relates to the "Udayana type," corresponding to the kingdom of Udayana, now modern-day Swat Valley, Pakistan. According to the legend, King Udayana had an image made and presented it to Buddha, which was sanctioned by the teacher. From this region similarly robed images of Maitreya were transmitted along the Silk Road to China.
