In the Buddhist cosmology, Mount Mehru stands at the center of the universe, its four sides composed of precious materials. Surrounding the mountain are the Four Continents, each with two adjacent large islands. The southern continent, Jambudvipa, considered to be Earth, is shaped in the form of the Indian subcontinent, and is represented on this mandala plate by the three triangles.
