Born in Oxford in 1953 and educated at Eton, Camberwell School of Art and Cheltenham School of Fine Art, Matthew Carr was taken up by Andy Warhol in the 1970s, and through him the gallery owner Robert Fraser, who first exhibited Carr's work in 1983. Through Fraser he received commissions for portraits from wealthy patrons which took him from London to places such as Venice and New York. Unfortunately, during this period Carr was battling addiction to drugs and alcohol, which he later referred to as '20 wasted years'. However he overcame his addictions by 2000 and in recent years has held 3 solo exhibitions at Marlborough Fine Art. Sadly, Carr passed away in February this year after a battle with leukaemia.
