A FINELY CARVED PALE GREENISH-WHITE AND RUSSET JADE ARCHAISTIC HEXAGONAL CUP
MING DYNASTY (1368-1644)
Of faceted hexagonal section, the slightly rounded sides rising from the short foot of conforming shape, carved in openwork at one end with two chilong with open mouths clambering up to the rim where they confront each other opposite the broad stylized taotie mask that surmounts the strap handle, the base carved with a four-character Qianlong seal mark, the luminous, semi-translucent stone of pale greenish-white color with some added russet color

Lot Essay

A smaller (8 cm.) white jade faceted cup, with the same stylized taotie mask surmounting the handle opposite a chilong clambering towards the rim, is in the Qing Court collection, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum - Jadeware (II), Hong Kong, 1995, p. 249, no. 192, where it is dated to the early Ming dynasty.
