Of faceted fanggu form with tall, spreading foot, carved in high relief on each canted corner of the midsection with a large outward-facing bat shown as if suspended with closed wings, the flared neck carved in relief on two sides with a shou character flanked by monster mask handles suspending loose rings on the narrow sides, the luminous, semi-translucent stone of white color with some added russet coloring

Lot Essay

The present jade vase is an archaistic interpretation of a Shang dynasty bronze gu, or ritual wine vessel. The combination of bats (fu) and shou characters seen on the present vase forms the rebus fushou shuangquan, or 'May you possess both blessings and longevity'.
