Lot Essay

Most published examples of coconut carvings tend to be in the form of cups and small bowls, such as the examples illustrated in Tributes from Guangdong to the Qing Court, The Palace Museum and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 1987, p. 69, nos. 1 and 2. However, dishes such as the present example seem to be quite rare, and no other identical example appears to be published.
