A RARE INSCRIBED HARDWOOD ALBUM-LEAF STAND
LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY
Made as a hinged rectangular case that holds six slender bars that are stored in a rectangular recess on one side of the interior, when fitted together they form a slanted support and the ends of the upright members sit in the recess on one side and two small recesses on the other side, the cover carved with a cyclical bingzi date, corresponding to 1876 or 1936, and a lengthy inscription followed by two seals, with two small metal hook and eye closures

Lot Essay

The inscription, shu qi zhun jian qi zhi zuo zhi kai mo feng wei biao shi, may be translated, 'The exactness, hardness and quality of the wood used to create this model, make this an ideal example of its type,' and is dated bingzi meng qiu (first month of autumn of the bingzi year), followed by Baiyang zizhi ming (self carved by Baiyang), and two seals, Chen and Changyan yin.
