The National League of Professional Baseball Clubs, known today as the National League, was founded in 1876, and was the first professional sports conference in the United States. The introduction of organized sport inspired various American artists, such as Jonathan Scott Hartley, to create baseball themed works of art including the present work, 'The Baseball Player.'
