Lot Essay

Wilhelm von Knyphausen was a lieutenant general in a Hessian troop of German soldiers commissioned by the British to fight in the American Revolutionary War. Knyphausen led troops under Sir William Howe in the Battle of Brandywine in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.

This watercolor will be included in Betsy James Wyeth's forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work.
