AN UNUSUAL WHITE AND RUSSET JADE ARCHAISTIC DAGGER HANDLE
18TH CENTURY
Of flattened oval section, pierced at one end for the insertion of the dagger below a narrow band of chevron pattern, with a wider band of dense comma scrolls set between rope-twist borders farther up the handle, the asymmetrical butt end pierced and with a chilong crawling down one edge opposite an archaistic bird with trailing scrolled tail that, along with an angular openwork scroll below, forms indentations for gripping, the finely polished white stone with enhanced russet color on one side

An inscription on the box reads: gu yu dao bing X jing pin ('ancient jade handle X great work'). Inscriptions inside the box state that the piece was acquired from Wang Wenxin in the third month of jiaxu year (1934).
Wang was a close friend of Xu's, and was the grandson of Wang Yangdu, a great collector of the Daoguang period (1821-1850).
