In the form of a hare, depicted hanging as if dead, with head thrown back, its forelegs and hind legs extended, toes delinated, outside of ears, tail and mouth of vessel in black, the fur rendered by brown stippling, whiskers in added red

Private collection, UK; acquired by Nicholas Embiricos, the husband of the current owner, prior to 1972.

Lot Essay

Hares were often given as a love gift between an older to a younger man, and it is possible that this aryballos performed a similar function.
