Lot Essay

This mould was likely used in the manufacture of either sheet gold or silver crosses. For a gold cross in repoussé made by such a mould cf. Papanikola-Bakirtzi ed., Byzantine Hours, Works and Days in Byzantium: Everyday Life in Byzantium, Athens, 2002, no. 511. Cf. L. Wamser ed. Die Welt von Byzanz - Europas östliches Erbe, Munich, 2004, no. 509, for a similar mould.
