A RARE WORK ON SUNDIALS by the Spanish polymath who is reputed to have published no less than 262 works on grammar, poetry, oratory, mathematics, astronomy, physics, politics, canon law, logic, metaphysics, theology and asceticism. In mathematics, Donald Knuth (The Art of Computer Programming, vol. II, pp. 45-48) credits Caramuel with the first published discussion of the binary system. The title to the present work is a playful variation on the traditional motto for sundials, 'Solis et artis opus', suggesting this was a somewhat illicit or daringly new presentation of horological science. Palau 43552.
