Lot Essay
'Mon. 31 Aug. Started about 11 on ski and went to Tortoise Rock. It was a splendid day and the sun was up the whole way till I got there. I was alone and thoroughly enjoyed it, though the surface was terrible and very tiring, not a hundred yards smooth snow all the way. There and back is about 16 miles. ... the sky was wonderful all the afternoon, a blaze of orange fire light ... Erebus' smoke was interesting to watch too today, as it was rising in a straight column for some thousands of feet, showing three separate curls from separate vents.' (from Edward Wilson's diary of the Discovery expedition, SPRI)
