SHACKLETON, Ernest Henry (1874-1922). Autograph letter signed ('Ernest Shackleton') to Alfred, 1st Viscount Northcliffe, Marlborough Club, London, 28 December 1913, 4 pages, 8vo, bifolium.
Announcing the Trans-Antarctic Expedition: 'I have just (10 pm) come away from the "Times" office, where I handed the Editor a letter for publication tomorrow, stating that an expedition will leave England next year under my leadership, to cross the South Polar continent from sea to sea'; wondering how he can give an 'advantage' to the Daily Mail (another of Northcliffe's papers), Shackleton goes on to suggest 'a signed article from me on my plans. It would, of course, be the only one I should write'.
