HERVÉ, Francis (1781-1850). A Residence in Greece and Turkey; with notes of the journey through Bulgaria, Sevia, Hungary and the Balkan. London: Whittaker, 1837. 2 vols., 8° (210 x 128mm), tinted lithographic frontispieces, additional titles and 10 plates after the author. (Occasional light browning or spotting, vol. I lacks half-title.) Contemporary citron calf in gilt and blind, covers ruled in gilt with garland border in blind, red morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers and edges (lightly soiled, a few scratch marks).
FIRST EDITION 'of this amusing and gossipy account of Hervé's sojourn in the East' which took place in 1833. Hervé had intended to go directly to Constantinople, but was delayed in Greece by a fellow passenger, General G. [i.e. General Gordon]. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1818 and 1840, and his plates include both portraits and landscape, some of the former being of leaders of the Greek revolution. The French-born artist was also the editor of Madame Tussaud's Memoirs of the French Revolution (Philadelphia, 1838, 2 vols). Atabey 575 (this copy); Blackmer 808; Weber I, 253. (2)
