KLAPROTH, Jules (1783-1835). Voyage au Mont Caucase et en Géorgie. Paris: Charles Gosselin, 1823. 2 vols., 8° (215 x 132mm), half-titles, folding engraved map of Georgia after Klaproth, folding letterpress table. FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH, following earlier German and English editions. After his interest in Asiatic languages had earned him membership of the St. Petersburg Academy, Klaproth joined Count Golovkin's embassy to China in 1805. On his return the Academy sent him on the ethnographic and linguistic expedition to the Caucasus (1807-1808), memorably described in this book. Atabey 637; Brunet III, 672: 'l'auteur a élagué de cette traduction française tout ce qui tient aux recherches purement historiques, ainsi que le 3e vol. de l'édition allemande'; not in Blackmer. (2)
