REBIRTH OF A LEGEND: INGLENOOK FROM THE PRIVATE COLLECTION OF FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA

The 1941 Inglenook, a wine James Laube has called "among the greatest red wines ever made," rightly takes its place among vinous legends like the 1945 Mouton-Rothschild, 1982 Lafite Rothschild, 1900 Margaux, 1961 Latour and 1989 Haut Brion, some of the most celebrated, most valuable and longest lived Cabernet Sauvignon-based wines in the world today. In fact, all of the wines made at the storied Inglenook property, from 1933 to 1964, are legends in their own right.

We are pleased to be offering numerous lots of Inglenook, all from the Estate's Golden Age when John Daniel Jr. was making wine, and all from the private collection of the estate's current owner, Francis Ford Coppola.

In 1975, Mr. Coppola and his wife, Eleanor, purchased part of the historic Inglenook Estate. By that time, the estate had been broken up and the name sold off. In homage to Gustave Niebaum, the Finnish sea captain and previous owner of the estate, Mr. Coppola named his winery Niebaum-Coppola. In 2005, he renamed it Rubicon Estate, after the flagship wine, first produced in 1978 and on offer in this sale.

Now, Mr. Coppola has renovated the chateau, acquired the Inglenook name, and hired Bordeaux winemaker Philippe Bascaules, with the goal of creating the great American wine estate. "In America, so few things that are broken apart are ever put back together," Coppola says. "Reuniting this property is truly a dream come true, both for my family and for Napa Valley."

This sale is a truly unique offering. First, the 1935, an offering so rare the estate would only part with a single bottle. Each vintage until 1964 is a John Daniel Jr. vintage, the highlight being the 1941, with two bottles being offered here.

Numerous vintages are in wooden boxes custom-made for this sale. Each lot comes with a handwritten note from Francis Ford Coppola-from his cellar, to yours.
