Pétrus--Vintage 1982
Pomerol, cru exceptionnel
Lot 356 levels: into neck; capsules cut by Christie's specialists to reveal Château and vintage branded corks, one capsule lightly corroded at top, one unattached and torn label, one missing label
Lot 357 levels: five into neck, three bottom neck; five slightly depressed corks, two nicked capsules, lightly oxidized capsules, two nicked labels, lightly wrinkled and lightly bin soiled labels
"This is a wine that will make you swoon. The 1982 Pétrus seemed superior to other recent bottles and completely delicious. This exemplar showed a super-ripe black fruit character with hints of plum and blackberry, but also a bit of fig and prune to give a deeper register. There was just the beginning of a developed cedary aromas and a hint of leather or game - something slightly exotic at the end of the nose. On the palate the wine was silky and fine, yet fat and hefty at the same time: both very substantial and incredibly elegant. The wine retains a full complement of tannin and a fresh acidity, leading it to a long, subtle finish. This wine, stored well, will go another fifty years or more. Let's hope that all of our great-grandchildren get to have a taste!" CC, dinner with friends in New Jersey, July 2011
