The inception of Ornellaia was in the waning days of 1970, when Lodovico Antinori trekked out to Bolgheri to make his own wine. With the advice of Tibor Gall, Antinori began making wine, whose first commercial vintage was in 1985. Ornellaia is a Cabernet and Merlot blend that competes with neighbor Sassicaia in the Super Tuscan category. Masseto, a 100 Merlot wine, has nearly eclipsed its older brother and is known as the "Pétrus of Tuscany."
