A MINA'I TURQUOISE-GLAZED POTTERY BOWL
CENTRAL IRAN, CIRCA 1200
Rising from vertical foot through conical sides to slightly everted rim, the turquoise interior decorated with overglaze enamels and gilt with a central mounted horseman within a wide border of complex interlacing black and white arabesques with gold and cobalt highlights, the rim with a band of white kufic reserved against black ground, the exterior with a single band of loose black naskh, repaired breaks
8 1/8in. (20.5cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The inscription around the rim of this dish reads, al-'izz al-da'im wa al-iqbal al-za[aid] al'-izz wa al-iqbal (?) wa al-baqa al-qa'im wa al-da[wla] wa al-sa'ada and thereafter repeats of al-dawla wa al-sa'ada, 'Perpetual glory and increasing fortune, glory and fortune (?) and long life and perpetual long life and wealth (?) and happiness, and wealth and happiness'.
