Lot Essay

Cecily Langdale states that Isabel Bowser was an artist and close friend of Gwen John. The two met circa 1908 when Gwen sat for her. It is thought by Miss Bowser's family that the two lived together in Paris during the 1910s [letter of 24 January 1984 from Nona Hill to Cecily Langdale]. Bowser owned a number of Gwen's pictures and was the sister of Rhoda Symons, whose husband Arthur was the subject of a number of drawings by Gwen John.

This lot is sold with a letter of authentication from Cecily Langdale.
