Lot Essay

Like William Blake, Swanwick put particular emphasis on the foot, as can be seen in the main figure of the present work. Swanwick explored the symbolism and vulnerability of the feet and support they lend the whole human structure (see P. Rossmore, Betty Swanwick: Artist and Visionary, London, 2008, p. 37).
The present work was printed on a postcard by the Royal Academy in 1981. It is also known as 'The Last Supper'.
