As well as being an honorary Professor of Fine Art at the University of Plymouth, Virtue was the National Gallery's sixth associate artist 2003-2005. His monchrome landscapes are inspired by where he happens to be living. In 1971 he moved to Green Haworth, a small village on the edge of the Pennine moorland and his paintings during this time were predominately of this location. These works are all pre-1978 when Virtue ceased to work in colour, seeing it as 'an unnecessary distraction'.
