Lot Essay
Though unsigned, the mastery of the present lot may be attributed to either Frederico Campaneli or Cesare Roccheggiani, both of whom were under the employ of the Vatican Mosaic Workshop and specialized in flower pictures after the Baroque masters.
A nearly identical mosaic, both in scale and level of execution, is illustrated in J. Hanisee Gabriel, The Gilbert Collection Micromosaics, London, 2000, p. 162. Similar panels of this size by Roccheggiani and Campaneli were sold Sotheby's, New York, 21 October 2009, lot 60 ($80,500) and Sotheby's, London, 5 July 2006, lot 268 ($64,800), respectively. Two smaller panels, formerly in the collection of Sir Arthur Gilbert (illustrated op. cit., p. 159) were sold Christie's, New York, 23 April 2004, lot 71 ($89,625).
