The present pair of vases was shown at the Paris Universelle Exposition of 1889. Two retailer represented Mintons at this event and based on the provenance trail it is likely that this pair was displayed by Thomas Goode & Co. at that time. On the strength of Thomas Goode's display, Minton was awarded the Grand Prize, winning great acclaim for the factory and for the artists who participated.

According to B. Bumpus, op. cit, p. 129, the present pair is recorded in the Minton Estimate Book as completed in June 1888 by unidentified pâte-sur-pâte apprentices; however in the Minton Vases 1999 Calendar published by Mintons the caption identifies the work as Louis Solon, 1888. Solon's Illustrated Journal documents designs for only five pairs of vases of this form, all executed between 1871 and 1874.
