A REGENCY SILVER-GILT SIDEBOARD DISH
This lot is offered without reserve. PERRY FOSTER OF THE LEOPARD'S HEAD Perry Foster, born in Calvert Texas, was a graduate of the University of Texas and earned his law degree at the University of Texas Law School. He served as a highly regarded lawyer for the federal government for 37 years. In 1980, Perry and his wife Cynthia, also a lawyer, founded The Leopard's Head, an antique silver business, in San Francisco. They formed an association with Argentum Antiques in 1981, together becoming the most important silver dealers on the West Coast and one of the most scholarly firms anywhere, with a silver reference library surpassed by none. During their partnership, the two businesses, Argentum-The Leopard's Head, exhibited at major antique shows throughout the country as well as maintaining a well stocked shop in downtown San Francisco. Argentum was owned by the late Michael Weller, who was a close friend as well as business partner, and like Perry, was extremely knowledgeable. After his retirement from the government in 2002, Perry devoted full time to working in the silver business, including maintaining an extensive website and, with Michael Weller, making presentations on antique silver to the collecting and scholarly community. Circular, the border chased in high relief, each cartouche with reclining figure representing the four continents, with respectively an elephant and lion; camel; crocodile and monkeys; and cow and sheep, the field engraved with coat-of-arms with elaborate foliate cartouche, marked on reverse
