Each rectangular with canted corners, on four scroll feet, the hinged cover with gadrooned border, each cover engraved with a coat-of-arms within a garter motto, with later ruby glass liners, marked under bases and on each cover

The arms are those of Leicester.
A pair of double spice boxes by Anne Tanqueray of 1728, of similar scale and weight, sold from the collection of Parham Park, Pulborough, West Sussex, Christie's, London, 13-14 May 1996, lot 254.
