Lot Essay

Doll is one of the pieces from a series titled Alien-to-itself. The series is about creating a tension by building a gap between what is seen and what actually exists. This highly decorated and hand-made ceramic doll brings multiple notions together. It is centered in the area where Eastern and Western notions of beauty merge. As its characteristic decoration covers the entire body, it invites the viewer on a journey back centuries ago to the motherland Anatolia where human forms were not allowed to be depicted.

The mini-sculpture, which requires a lot of meticulous work, is also a suggestion of a slowdown in a time when speed is considered as being the most precious value. In this 'doll', there is just one's own power and will - instead of giant industrial machines.

Despite its cute look, this alienated tiny sculpture actually raises questions and causes confusion about its representation through its different channels suggested such as beauty, decoration as well as Eastern and Western cultures.
